Give Us Some More, Man!
Today’s match against Brigham Young University proved a welcome challenge for UCSD Women’s Rugby! Coming off from their win two weeks prior against UCSB, the Tritons had pretty high spirits going into this match, which set the tone for its duration. They played with the same intensity that earned them the win against UCSB, despite the threat of playing a team with years of experience like BYU. They let a few tries through in the beginning of the match, which really turned on the energy of the team, leading one of the tries to be held up! Going into the second half of the match, the Tritons landed some impressive tackles, along with greatly improving their scrums and rucks to maintain the possession of the ball. The real triumph of the match was the experience for the rookies, as the majority of our Tritons are new members to the team! Special mentions to Adele Morales and AJ Fuller for playing their first games! Even though the score may have been 80-0 as a win for BYU, the match allowed for the Tritons to work on their skills in a more advanced setting, which will pay off in their match against the University of Arizona in April.
As their second home game of the season, it would be remiss if the fans were not mentioned. Individuals from Men’s Rugby and Men’s Soccer, as well as family, friends, and UCSD alumni attended the match to cheer the Tritons on. These fans reminded the Tritons that rugby is all about the experience, and that showing up and giving it your all is more important than winning, so the Tritons are so grateful for them! On the other hand, BYU should watch their backs next season when their rookies become vets!
