During the final regular season tournament of the season, UC San Diego needed to win 3 of their 6 games to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The weekend did not start off well for the Tritons, as matched against two of the higher ranked teams (U of A and NAU)they lost both early contests. The next two games against Long Beach state were needed wins. Although very close, 3 to 4 in the first game and 1 to 3 in the second; UCSD lost both of those games as well as loosing a playoff spot in the post season. Sundays games kicked off early with the first starting at 8am against Cal Poly Pamona, not quite awake UCSD suffered an upsetting and unexpected loss with a final score of 0 to 9. The final game of the weekend was against UC Irvine. While UCSD was finally able to gain a win for the weekend, it did not come easily. The score at the end of regulation was 4 to 4, sending both teams into sudden death overtime. The scored remained tied at the end of overtime leading to the first shoot out of the season. Stefan Jovanovic, a senior finishing his second year on the team, started the shoot with a skillful five hole goal while the goalie was desperately trying to make the save. Dexter Hamilton, a freshman finishing his first year with the team, completely shut down the opposing shooters not letting in a single goal during the shoot out. Gary Soeller, a graduate student playing his last year on the team, scored a second goal with a precision shot that the opposing goalie had no chance of stopping. His goal secured the win for UCSD and supplied a great end to the weekend tournament. Despite exhaustive efforts by the team they fell just short missing playoff by one spot.
