Your ladies of the UC San Diego Club volleyball started off the Far Western Tournament at Davis with a strong start. Winning every game in 2 the girls showed that they are not to be messed with. The ladies went 3-0 against UCSB B, Colorado, and Oregon State. The girls played strong the entire day with Emma ‘Chubs’ Choi playing incredible defense, and Giovanna ‘G’ Silberman controlling the pass. Our triple threats, Captains Amanda ‘Giggles’ Dieterle and Sydney ‘Can You Dig It?’ Riegert lead the team with blocks, hits, and a killer attitude! Sarah ‘Can’t Touch This’ Reinhardt dominated the line hit, making it impossible for the other teams to dig it. Julia ‘Juju’ House kept it nice and steady taking 2 solo blocks against Colorado. Our two middles; Alicia ‘Block This!’ Chen and Michelle ‘Flying Squirrel” Voung took control of the net, disabling most of the hits from coming over. Gina ‘G-Nasty’ powers led the team offense setting fast sets and aiding our hitters in getting them kills, making it nearly impossible for the other teams to get a touch!
Day 2 at Davis and the girls started off to a slow start against SFSU. The ladies played slow and sluggish going back and forth, point for point against their opponent. It wasn’t until the girls were losing 15-11, in the first set, did they pick up the slack and showed UC San Diego was not a team to be messed with. Once the day got rolling, it was smooth sailing for the Tritons, winning the first set 25-18 and destroying SFSU 25-11 in the second.
Second game of pool play, and it was a very difficult match for the Tritons. The ladies went up against Cal Poly SLO and lost in 2 during pool play. They worked hard, but sadly the ladies came up a bit short. But hope was not lost, due to a phenomenal first day, they were still in the running to take the entire tournament. Later that day in playoffs, The Tritons went up against Sonoma, Phil and Taylor’s alma mater. The ladies put a valiant effort, but sadly the girls came short and lost. Overall the girls had a great strong weekend and now have two weeks to kill it at Regionals at SDSU.
