California Cup Regional Playoffs
In the single elimination tournament to decide which school would win the California cup, the Tritons were set to face off against the Gauchos Friday night at their home rink. Both teams battled hard, and no one was able to score in the first period. The defensive battle continued for both teams as goaltender Peter Simonsen stood on his head, making save after save. However, the Gauchos were able to capitalize on a defensive breakdown, and score on a breakaway right before the end of the second to give them a 1-0 lead. Going into the locker room, the Tritons knew they needed to score quickly. About half way into the third period, Captain Dylan Shives scored between the goalies legs from a feed from defensemen Adam Klas on the power play to tie the game up at 1-1. UCSB answered back, however, and regained the lead. Late in the third period, with goaltender Peter Simonsen pulled, the Tritons fired multiple shots at the Gaucho’s goaltender, but were unable to send the game to overtime. The Triton fought hard all season, and even though they did not retain the championship, are still proud of the level of play and look forward to next season. We want to thank everyone who supported us this season and can’t wait to get back out onto the ice. Go Tritons!
