What a Start!
While everyone was gearing up for the most crucial week at UC San Diego, finals week, the UC San Diego Women’s Rugby team booted up to take on Cal State Northridge in their 2015-2016 season opener. While the exploded scrum was being assembled for opening kick, there were a lot of new lady Tritons on the field, but that did not impact the game plan nor mindset of this special group of women. Within the first 2 minutes, Tegian McDonald, the incoming rookie outside center, comes through with the first try of the regular season which followed by a kick conversion by scrumhalf, Alex Beckett. This quick try set the tone for the rest of the half with the Tritons scoring 5 more tries by Wing Ly, Maria Bellanacina, Jaylin Stevenson, Alex Beckett, and another by Teigan McDonald plus 4 conversion kicks by Alex Beckett all while the Triton’s defense kept CSUN scoreless by the half. Start of the second half UC San Diego continued to play team rugby scoring 3 more tries until, CSUN at the 67 minute mark finally made their first and last try of the game. The lady Tritons scored 2 more tries ending the game 69-5. This was a huge win for the lady Tritons and a fantastic start for their journey back to USA Rugby’s Nationals tournament.
