Big Conference Win Against #5 CSU San Marcos

UCSD, who took the 2nd spot in the national rankings earlier this week, headed to the 5th ranked CSU San Marcos for perhaps their toughest game of the regular season. The San Marcos Cougars came out strong, winning the first few draws of the game. With fast legs and quick connections, the Cougars capitalized on fast breaks and put some points on the scoreboard in the first few minutes. However, the Tritons quickly caught up, taking advantage of their own possessions. The first quarter ended 2-4. Eager to get ahead, the Tritons relied on their defensive end for takeaways since the Cougars were dominant on the draw. When this happened, transitions to the offensive end were clean through the midfield. The Tritons did not rush the goal and worked hard to set each other up for scoring opportunities. At halftime, the game was tied 5-5. Recurring yellow cards for the Cougars afforded the Tritons several minutes of man-up playtime. During the third and into the fourth, the Tritons started to get a hand on the draw and the midfielders came up with possession. This momentum pushed the Tritons through the last quarter, getting two last-minute goals to secure the close win. The top scorer was Junior Gillian Husovsky with 3 goals. Other notable mentions include Junior Captain Ellen Jurgens (2 goals), Sophomore Kayla Tracy (2 goals), Sophomore Heather Hirsch (2 goals), Junior Captain Delainey Iles (1 goal), Junior Sarah Brown (1 goal), and Sophomore Karli Adams (1 goal). Sophomore Captain Grace Drawer, Sophomore Riley Carney, and Grad Galina Isayeva all got key ground balls on defense. The Tritons look forward to their last game of the regular season against USC at home on March 20th at 4 pm.
