B-Co At Claremont Classic
This past Sunday, March 5th, UCSD Dragon Coalition's B Team (B-Co) attended a one-day tournament hosted by Claremont. Their first game was against UC Irvine and it was a tough start to the day. UCI came out with intensity, and B-Co struggled to play against their unique “bracket” formation. With their coaches' help, B-Co devised a strategy to beat this defensive formation and scored some points. Unfortunately, it was not enough. They lost with a close score of 5-7. Next, B-Co played Claremont who they had faced a couple of weeks ago at Santa Clara. Claremont was a formidable opponent, but B-Co was still hot from their previous game and played with excitement. There were several long points, and it was impressive how long both teams stayed fighting. Bella “Chila” Ely stood out in this game for her great throws and calm demeanor while discussing various calls. She was even recognized with a spirit award from Claremont. This match also included a half-time dance break led by Claremont, which invigorated both teams. The game was a tough battle that ended in a loss of 4-6 for B-Co.
The third game was against UCLA B, a common opponent of B-Co. This game was the most riveting of the day as the two teams were evenly matched, and exchanged scores in the beginning. However, as the game progressed the B-Co D-line became familiar with UCLA’s offense and shut them down, converting a majority of their points into scores. With O-line securing scores themselves, B-Co ended the match with a victory of 8-4. The final match of the day was against Occidental, another team that B-Co had encountered at Santa Clara. This game was also very close, with the teams taking turns in the leading position. Occidental played a vertical stack which is very susceptible to picks, so Yasmin “Osprey” Jaber made several calls, to the delight of her team. Other notable players include Olivia “T-Bolt” Dance, Matilda “Sosha” Gaddi, and Ellia “Veza” Torkian who were all active on and off the field. Their energy on the sideline greatly motivated the team which was significant as the team had begun the day with a slow start. The game was close but ultimately B-Co lost against Occidental with a final score of 6-7.
Although B-Co’s games were rough, it was a great experience and everyone had a lot of fun!
