UC San Diego Plays Their Final Match of the Season
In our league match against UCI this past weekend at UCI (4/3), UC San Diego played a convincing game, but sadly came up short, losing to them 6-9 out of 15 matches. Many matches were close, and our players tried their best.
Honorable mentions include freshmen Chris Pham and Justin Yur playing Men’s Doubles 1 against UCI’s Ethan Wu and Francis Yao. In a close 3 set match our players won the first set 23-21, but Ethan and Francis were able to bring it back the second set with a score of 21-17. In the final set, our boys pushed through with good defense and fast shots. This led them to climb up from a deficit to catch up to Francis and Ethan, but were just a bit short of victory with a final score of 21-19.
For Mixed Doubles, captain Albert Nguyen and freshman Cindy Chan played a strong game against UCI’s Hieu Trinh and Deborah Park. The match proved difficult with Deborah’s net play and Hieu’s aggressive style, but Albert and Cindy’s resilience were able to get them to a third set. Although they made it this far the previous two games burnt both of them out. They gave it their all, but lost with a final score of 21-17, 18-21, 14-21.14.
As our season comes to a close, our women have shown that they are a consistent and powerful force. Five out of six of the wins came from Women’s Singles and Doubles. Overall, our team came in fourth place in the SCCBL, and we are looking forward to a strong performance at our league Postseason Tournament with a loss for UCI. The two matches that split could have gone either way, which would have given us a win. We hope for the post season tournament.
