UCSD Competes at Orange County Table Tennis Academy!
UC San Diego’s Table Tennis Team competed in their second divisional tournament of the year at Orange County Table Tennis Academy (OCTTA) and it was a major success!
Their Co-ed Varsity team faced against UCLA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and UC Santa Barbara winning 3-1, 4-0, and 4-0 respectively, placing UCSD first in their division for the team event. It was especially exciting to see former US National Team Member, Victor Liu, make his debut for UCSD. Their JV1 team went up against UCLA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and University of Southern California (unofficial matchup), impressively beating all three schools without dropping a single match or a single set in any match. Lastly, UCSD’s Women’s Varsity team looked to avenge their tight loss to Arizona State University last tournament.
They were able to get to 2-2, but unfortunately lost the tie-breaking doubles match to finish 2-3 overall. Afterward, they also played various friendly matches with teams from UCLA and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, easily winning those matches. Their outstanding performance earned both the Co-ed Varsity and Women’s Varsity teams an invitation to the West Regional Tournament in a few weeks.
The NCTTA Singles event also took place that day. Graduate Student Yaohong Wang and Junior Brandon Koh both reached the semifinals of the Socal West Men’s Singles tournament, with Yaohong edging out Brandon for third place, directly qualifying him for the Regional tournament. Sophomore Matthew Shen had a strong performance as well, being able to reach the Quarterfinals before getting eliminated by the eventual champion. Junior Jaslyn Lu, captain of the UCSD Women’s Varsity team, also did well in Women’s Singles, getting second place and directly qualifying her for Regionals.
The 2022 West Regional Championships will be back at OCTTA on February 26-27 where UCSD will be facing the top schools on the West Coast!
