UCSD Super Smash Bros Esports team makes a statement in the first round of the NACE Smash Ultimate Collegiate League, decisively defeating CSU San Marcos in an 8-0 victory.

The match began with UC San Diego’s Joel ‘Sphinx’ playing Palutena against San Marcos' John ‘Risso’. Sphinx was dominant in game one, defeating Risso while only losing a single stock. Sphinx’s streak continued in game two, taking all three of Andrew ‘Tex’s stocks, without losing a single stock of his own. In game three, Sphinx would lose another stock, but defeated his third opponent, Michael ‘Weeb’, giving UC San Diego a 7 stock lead. Sphinx entered into game four with only a single stock remaining and would fall to Christian ‘Redd’s Mythra, but not before taking another stock from San Marcos. UC San Diego’s Micah ‘CPU’ cleaned up in game five, taking the final two stocks from Redd while losing only one of his own. All told, UC San Diego defeated San Marcos with a momentous 8 stock lead.           

Sphinx was the clear MVP of the match, single handedly taking 10 out of San Marcos’ 12 stocks. With such an explosive start, it will be exciting to see UC San Diego’s performance in the rest of the season.
