UCSD Sailing Heads to Hawaii
Clear skies and a warm, humid breeze greeted the UCSD Sailing Team as they hopped off the plane in Honolulu on Thursday. Each sailor was eager to hit the water on Saturday for the Rainbow Invite Regatta hosted by the University of Hawaii.
Nick Dorn and Sebastien Franck started the regatta off strong in A division, finishing 2nd and 1st in the last two races of the day. Jonathan Hickey and Annaclaire Rogness followed with an elite performance in B division. The wind was light and inconsistent under partially cloudy skies, making for some very tactical racing. The Saturday sailors then handed the reins over to Noah Barton/Drake Coy (A div.) and Megan Saenz/Jessica Dally (B div.) for Sunday. These sailors competed hard through shifty and inconsistent wind, revelling in the opportunity to sail amongst the scenic terrain of O’ahu.
At the end of the day, UCSD finished 11th overall, and was presented a decorative coconut from the University of Hawai’i team. All sailors boarded the plane Monday morning very satisfied with the showing. It was an absolutely spectacular weekend, filled with great sailing and tropical vibes. Many thanks to the University of Hawai’i for hosting, and to UCSD Sports Clubs for allowing us to pursue this amazing competitive opportunity!
