Dragons Spotted at SoCal Conference Championships
UCSD Dragon Coalition (D-Co) along with Berserk Coalition (B-Co), your resident women’s ultimate A and B teams, came to SLO absolutely psyched for the first frisbee tournament in more than a year and a half. The tournament was formatted as a round robin rather than the usual bracket set-up due to reduced numbers of teams, but the stakes of the weekend were still high. This tournament was the gateway to Regionals and the rest of the USA Ultimate Fall Series (so stay tuned).
Saturday began early with B-Co playing the number 2 seed, the UCSB Burning Skirts. B-Co fared well, keeping the energy high and working through the cracks of the Burning Skirts’ defense to finish the game with a valiant 3-13. Their next games saw them go 4-10 against UCLA and 5-7 against USC.
The A team, D-Co, began the day playing Cal Poly-SLO, making big throws and bigger catches to win the game 13-4. A minor setback occurred when D-Co stumbled at the sheer athleticism of the Burning Skirts, the game finished with the Burning Skirts in the lead with 12 goals to D-Co’s 8. The next game was against USC, and as the wind began to pick up, the Dragons’ throws and catches were put to the test. D-Co worked through it patiently, winning 11-4.
The last game on Saturday was a dragon-showdown with D-Co playing B-Co. It was a vivacious game that saw the advent of such innovative strategies as the 7-person cup (commonly known as the Cuposaurus, according to some). Both teams fought the wind and heat as the long day came to a close, but ultimately D-Co came out on top with a score of 11-2.
Sunday proved to be a much shorter day for both teams with B-Co smashing Cal State-Long Beach 12-1 and putting up a fantastic fight against Cal Poly-SLO Slo Motion, taking the game to universe point though SLO ultimately came out victorious (7-8). D-Co had a similarly hard game against UCLA, with long points and tough defense, but D-Co pulled through to get a win, 9-6. D-Co then finished the day playing Cal State-Long Beach in a spirited game with a definitive win of 10-1.
D-Co finished second overall and will advance to Regionals (Nov. 13-14!) along with UCSB, UCLA, and USC. B-Co ends their run in Fall Series after a fantastic set of games this weekend, but don’t count them out yet, they’ll be coming back for some more fun round robins this fall!
