UCSD Dragon Coalition Holds Seed at Elite Stanford Invite

D-Co Womxn’s Ultimate traveled to the legendary polo fields of Stevinson, CA this weekend for some good old fashioned frisbee with our best friends. Even while missing a few key players, the dragons played hard  through rain and shine against a number of formidable teams.

Day one took off with a casual 7:45am warmup in the nice morning glow of the valley. D-Cos got off to a strong start with a 13-4 win against Texas Melee, and followed up with a 12-7 win against Minnesota Ninjas. As the fourth seed, the dragons got gritty with fifth seed Stanford Superfly for an intense match up game. Complete with gusty winds, zoney points, and full field hucks, both teams ran hard and fast for the pool play victory. In the final universe point, a lengthy battle between two fine teams and fourteen fine ultimate players, Stanford brought it home for the 8-7 victory. D-Co played against Pittsburg Danger in pre-quarters at the end of day one, with a 9-5 win to advance to quarters.

Day two started dark and early (early), with a 6:45 warmup post time change. We don’t always grind in the morning, but when we do we really get on it. The quarters game against UW Element started off on serve, but the Dragons’ break train left the station when Shaina “Noggin” Jewett-Wolf put up a flick huck to 7’8” Charlotte “Mojo” Sue in the end zone. D-Cos finished the game with an 11-8 win and advanced to semi finals. The semis matchup against Tufts EWO proved to be a tough one, and they took the win to advance to the finals. D-Cos met Stanford Superfly again (we really like hanging out with them) for the third place consolation game. Another intense game and a couple wild plays later, Superfly took the win 10-7, meaning the Dragons held the fourth seed in our toughest tournament this season.

Thanks to Stanford for hosting, and thanks to Alex “Dante” Diaz and her parents for bringing Sharon and Fosco again!
