Dragons Fly High at President's Day Invite 2020
This past weekend UCSD Womxn’s Ultimate Team hosted its President’s Day Invite Tournament. True to its name, Dragon Coalition lit up the fields and soared through three days of competition, placing third among some fierce teams.
Saturday started with some signature So-Cal sun to lift the team’s spirits, and we flew through three wins against Berkeley, Whitman, and Colorado. Our fourth game against Western Washington went to universe point, with Chaos ultimately reigning supreme over the Dragons in a tight 10-9 win. Little did we know that we’d later have a chance of redemption against Washington in a couple days time...
Sunday was a nice respite from the previous day of four games – the Dragons only battled two teams on this breezy day of Power Pools. In a first game against UMass, D-Co proved that dragons couldn’t be contained by (Lady) Zoo’s. Our second game against Texas showed that the dragons could dominate a melee with Melee.
Monday mist clouded the fields for the first game of the day against UCLA, but Dragons don’t need eyes to fly and coasted through with a win against BLU. However, we lost our fire against the Burning Skirts, and lost (again) in universe against UCSB. With renewed energy and a determination to close out this tournament with a win, D-Co again went head-to-head with Western Washington and ultimately claimed victory.
There were countless highlights from the weekend, but some fan favorites follow: Lydia “Spork” Smith made an amazing layout grab in the endzone – if the disc had been any closer to the ground it could’ve trimmed the grass at RIMAC. Kristine “Ritz” Mendoza and Catherine “Yogi” Trevino both had an amazing weekend, but in one play the duo made layout dives timed so perfectly that synchronized swimmers would be jealous. Many other notable plays and players this weekend, but if you want the full scoop you should follow our Twitter, @d_co_ultimate!
Also thanks to all the family, friends, and alumni for supporting your team this weekend – we love the extended Dragon family! Hope to see you all at our next tournament in Stanford, or at our big Alumni Day event this Spring!
