The Sun Came Out For the Win!

After a rainy morning in San Diego, the sky cleared up and we, UCSD women’s club soccer team, were more than ready to take on UC Irvine on our home field. The end result of the game was a solid win of 5-1, with an opening of two goals by McKenzie Kirn in the first ten minutes of the game. Kenzie’s assertive finishes set the tone for the rest of the game and more goals were scored soon after, with one goal by Ellie Price, one goal by Lauryn Ruegg, and one goal by Cynthia Ruiz.

Offensively, our team not only did a great job at creating opportunities to score, but a great job at finishing the opportunities we had. Elayna Osterman, Nadia Haghani, and Reese Flinn stood out as they dominated the midfield throughout the entire game and created plays which were essential to opening up lanes for the forwards to run in to. Two other standouts were Rachel and Katie who doubled as offensive and defensive powerhouses that kept the UC Irvine offense from getting through the back line as well as moving the ball forward and distributing the ball to the midfielders and forwards.

UC Irvine put up a fight until the very end, but our backline and two goalies, Maya and Allison held their own and only let in one goal. This definitely was a great team win as we connected very well with each other and moved the ball up the field as a connected unit. It is great to see that our hard work in practice is coming out on the field and that we can continue to secure our spot in first place and keep winning games!
