    Defending Honor

The third game of the UCSD WCS spring season began Sunday afternoon at 4:00PM,

after a two-hour drive through mild Los Angeles traffic. The team met to play against UC

Riverside with plenty of time to warm up, yet things felt initially slow on the field.

Beginning the game, right midfielder Ellie Price scored a quick volley goal against the

Bears, with the assist off a blocked shot from Cynthia Ruiz-Lopez. Riverside countered,

scoring a goal off a cross to tie the game 1-1. The intensity on the field rose, and both

teams were able to gain some composure, until a foul in the box on Lauryn Ruegg led to

a penalty shot for Rachel Ng; she scored effortlessly, and the Tritons led 2-1 going into

half. At this point, both teams had become acutely aware of the poor calls being made

by the referees, particularly a dangerous play against captain Jill Giannini, that resulted

in an immediate red card for Jade Joiner, for defending her captain. During the second

half, the Tritons dominated possession, despite poor field conditions and atrocious

refereeing, and striker McKenzie Kirn was able to score a beautiful goal, giving us a

final score of 3-1. Go Tritons!
