Lady Tritons Kick Off the 2020 Season With a Win
On Saturday, February 1st, the UCSD Women’s Lacrosse team kicked off their 2020 season with a game against CSU Long Beach. Many veteran athletes demonstrated killer athleticism and knowledge of the game as they were able score 10 of the points in the game. Outstanding veteran performances were seen by Laysha Nava Huerta and Shae Ziegler who scored 4 goals and 3 goals respectively. Numerous rookies impressed and began their collegiate careers with an incredible performance as they were able to make 4 goals collectively!
Other notable highlights came from Senior Defenseman Kellen Pedicord, who caused numerous turnovers, and through her incredible speed was able to help with multiple transitions down the field. Other defensive highlights include a text book double followed by a successful turnover by Jennifer “Jen” Daluz and Ellen Jurgens. Jen and Ellen were able to read the iso play being set by Long Beach, and through a textbook check by Ellen were able to run the ball down the field.
After just one game in season, numerous lady Tritons were ranked in the top 10 across the Western Women’s Lacrosse League (WWLL) for various categories. Freshman Ellen Jurgens was able to start her collegiate career with a bang, as she rose in the rankings for points per game with an average of 4. Other Lady Tritons that rose in the charts were Laysha Nava Huerta, for her average of 4 goals per game, and Josephine “Josie” Ballard with a killer saving percentage of 70%. In addition to the individual categories, the Lady Tritons are proud to announce that 2 athletes, Ellen and Laysha, have made the top 15 athletes for the Division 2 WWLL. We look forward to seeing these athletes rise further up in the statistical leaderboard and hope to see more Lady Tritons in the Top 10 as the season progresses.
The Lady Tritons were able to kick off the 2020 season with a 14-3 win against Long Beach and look forward to continuing on into a promising season. They will spend President’s Weekend, February 14-16th, in Santa Barbara playing in the Santa Barbara Shootout, an annual collegiate tournament.
