Cal Poly SLO - Mustang Open Regatta
This past weekend, the UCSD Sailing team partook in the Mustang Open Regatta in Morro Bay, hosted by Cal Poly SLO. Our sailors braved the long drive up the coast to camp at Morro Bay State Park, near where the regatta was taking place. For the first day of the regatta, our sailors awoke well-rested to low winds and light current in the bay, and the first few races occurred in low wind speeds (5-10 knots). Halfway through the day, the winds began to pick up strongly. Many boats began to capsize during the races as the winds overtook the bay. The winds eventually caused the cessation of all races, and the boats were brought in. The SLO team hosted a magnificent spaghetti dinner in their yacht club, and our team bonded with fellow sailors from the competing teams. After a night of camping, we awoke to light wind yet again. We had another day of slow winds that picked up strongly halfway through the day. Our sailors enjoyed the heavy winds, as our boats sped down the course. At the end of the day, our team gathered together to de-rig the boats, and we prepared for the long drive home. Our team placed 6th in the JV division and 13th in Varsity, with UC Santa Cruz taking first in the JV division and CSU Long Beach taking first in Varsity.
