SCCVL South Regional Tournament Sweep
Last weekend the A team endured the drive to California Polytechnic Pomona to compete in the South Divisional tournament. On Saturday they faced off against CSU Long Beach, UC Irvine, and SDSU.
Since the first match was not until noon, our boys were awake and ready to compete. Taking on CSULB first was no easy task. Senior setter John Duffy accomplished this mission in the first match by setting fiery fast balls to outside hitters Garret Smithgall and Curren Malhotra. Combining strength and finesse, UCSD was able to win this match quickly starting out the day 1-0.
The second match against UCI was a little longer, but nothing that middles Jack Lynch, Steve Medan, and Tanner Hixson couldn’t handle. They led the team with 12 kills and 10 blocks each. Connor Martin also stepped up for a vital 16 kills.
Now for the final match of the day against SDSU. Setter Wesley Wang, opposite Jason Lee, and libero Lance Muret led the charge and kept the game short and sweet. Setter/Oppo Nick Wilson carried the team to a third win with his sheer will, energy, and glasses.
All in all, this tournament showed that we have what it takes to come out on top in SCCVL league championships on March 28th.
