Tritons Lose Their Undefeated Streak
On February 22, UCSD took on PLNU in their fourth match of the season. After a bye and two weeks of practice, UCSD was ready to put their training to the test. The game began with PLNU taking an early lead. With the speed on the powerhouse of their forwards, PLNU put 15 points on the board in the first 20 minutes of the game. This lead was not only maintained but was also extended in the first half. By the end of the first half, UCSD’s explosive offense started to make a comeback with two tries by winger Fernando Harris.
Coming out of half time, UCSD was fatigued but eager to come back and win this game and cruise to take the league. This, however, was met with resistance from a hungry PLNU. In the first 5 minutes, PLNU was able to put points on the board after several hard runs. As if woken from daze, UCSD answered two tries of their own. As the last 20 minutes of the game began, UCSD was down 37 - 24. Even though UCSD was fighting to get back into the game they faced some bad injuries at the scrumhalf position with senior Alex De La Cruz and Ayan Gupta. Which lead to them not being to hold the ball and allowed one more score from PLNUs focused offense. Ending with the score of 44 – 24/
UCSD Men’s rugby take their hats off to PLNU for their tenacity and spirit and furthermore thank them for a great game. UCSD now is tied for 2nd in the division with a 3 - 1. They are going to learn from this loss get stronger and compete in two more games in hopes to win their league between a potential 3 way tie between Norco College, PLNU and UCSD.
