Tritons coming out strong in Their Home Opener
UCSD Men’s Rugby began the month of February with their first home game of the season. On February 1, UCSD took on CSU Northridge in their second match of the season.
After having spent a week of training and analyzing film, UCSD was eager to play a game of rugby. UCSD received the ball first. For the first few minutes UCSD retained the ball and slowly made their way upfield. It was not long after that UCSD carried the ball in for the first score of the match. Following this score was yet another score by UCSD bringing the score to 14 - 0 within the first 20 minutes. CSUN, however, was able to answer this try with one of their own when their group of forwards began to push through the UCSD defense. This tactic of constant forward assault led to another CSUN score before UCSD adjusted led by Prop Nael Mousa taking on CSUNs forwards where all the forwards followed. Once they did, UCSD shifted their focus back to offense and brought on a heap of points before the end of the first half. The score was then 28 - 12.
Coming out of half time, UCSD was determined to keep their lead. After studying the CSUN offense and defense in the first half, UCSD was ready to capitalize on their flaws. Early on in the second half, UCSD was able to score twice using their speed on the outside. Following those scores, UCSD again was able to punch a hole through the CSUN defense, with their forwards. By the 60th minute of the game, the score was 43 - 12, UCSD. However, CSUN was not discouraged and with fatigue setting in on the UCSD team which had very little backup players, they were able to add 2 more tries, bringing the score to 43 - 22, UCSD’s response was adding another 3 scores to the board, wrapping up the match with a score of 50 - 22, UCSD. This victory was a hard-fought one and UCSD thanks CSUN for their participation and wish them a good season.
