UCSD at UCLA’s Sunset Classic
The UCSD Dancesport Team showed their support for the Bruins by competing at UCLA’s inaugural competition, the Sunset Classic, hosted as a joint effort between UCLA and USC. The Tritons continued their success from the Mustang Ball, with both returning and new members placing in several events. Notable results include Liam McDonough and Alise Bruevich, who placed 1st in Newcomer Waltz and Tango, 2nd in Quickstep and Rumba, and 3rd in Cha Cha. Liam also placed 1st in Rookie/Vet Waltz with Emily Zhang and 3rd in Cha cha with Karen Lucknavalai. Harry Tran placed 1st in Rookie/Vet Tango and 3rd in Rumba with Emily, and 2nd in Lindy Hop with Alyssa Lee. Matthew Panelo and Karen swept the Silver Latin division, placing 1st in Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, and Jive. Matthew also placed 3rd in Beginner Hustle with Kelly Chow as well as 3rd in Gold Latin (Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba) and 1st in Jive with Emily. Jamshed Ashurov and Claudia Gu placed 2nd in Gold Latin, while Jamshed and Emily placed 3rd in Gold Standard (Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep) and Tango. After a dinner break was the Team Match, in which UCSD showed off their incredible school spirit, beating the host UCLA. Afterwards, more experienced dancers competed in the Open events, during which Emily finished off the night placing 2nd in Novice Latin (Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba) with Richard Le.
