Breaking the Ice
The UCSD Women's Blue and Gold team headed to Del Mar, CA for the first tournament of the season. The facility was freezing, but the Tritons consistently brought the heat over the course of the two day tournament. The Gold team faced adversity from the beginning, missing an outside, setter, and an opposite for the first day. Despite many players playing out of position, the Tritons never felt out of contention for any of their games. They finished the first day 2 - 2, almost taking a set off of the always talented SDSU-A team. They continued onto day 2 and played against UCSD-Blue. Though they played hard, they were unable to defeat their peers with Stephanie digging hit after hit all weekend. They fell in the first round of the silver bracket playoffs, finishing 6th in the tournament. The start of the season showed that this team would be a feisty team to beat
The UCSD-Blue team went into the tournament excited to finally play after a long fall quarter of training. They showed grit and consistency against CSU Fullerton, Azusa Pacific University, Mount St. Mary's University and UC Irvine, finishing day 1 4-0. The Blue team went into the second day knowing the only thing standing in their way of the gold bracket was their own Gold team. Gabbi and Val brought the heat to scorch the Gold team to move the tritons into the Gold bracket. The Tritons rolled over UC Riverside, despite their incredible defense, moving them onto the finals against APU, a team they beat earlier in the tournament. The Blue team proved their earlier win was not a fluke by tearing through the APU defense, and shutting down their offense. The team finished the tournament in first place, with Emma and Rachael earning All-Tournament Honors.
