Tritons Dominated Huntington Beach Tournament
After spending week three dominating midterms, the UCSD Women’s Beach Volleyball team spent their Sunday dominating the sand in Huntington Beach with 2 collective brain cells. After getting an extra hour of sleep, the team was fueled up and ready to take on their competition with each other. 6/7 of the teams in Huntington Beach were made up of tritons, but that didn’t stop our competitive spirit as we went for a podium sweep against Cal Poly Pomona. CPP’s hopes of placing in the tournament were thoroughly dashed when they didn’t make it into the gold bracket after pool play thanks to some stellar play from the teams of Isabella Cobarruvias/Valeria Jimenez, Shaylee Prelewicz/Bryn Gerding, and Becca Strait/Vanessa Howard. Bella and Val, the two time defending champions, lost in the semifinals to Jess and Sam, so a new champion was guaranteed to be crowned. Sylvia and Ryley bested Shaylee and Bryn in the second semifinal, setting up the final. After a long day, Jess and Sam’s consistency beat Sylvia and Ryley 23-21 in the second set, winning the first place and the prize of sunglasses from Blenders Eyewear, Sun Bum sunscreen, and mini Molten volleyballs. Sylvia and Ryley took second and Bella and Val beat Shaylee and Bryn to win third. Despite some adding errors and one annoying stingray, the UCSD tritons had a blast at our third beach tournament of the year
