The Long Awaited Race: College Cup 2019
This past weekend, our team drove up to San Francisco and participated in College Cup, our most important and competitive race of the year. After the cancellation of the race last year, many teams were devastated and spent the rest of the year training and preparing for the next College Cup. It has been exactly 2 years since the last College Cup race, so the days leading up to this event were filled with suspense and excitement.
College Cup 2019 is a special race for our team. It was the first time ever in UCSDDB history where we raced 3 boats, and in addition we were the only team there with 3 boats! A majority of the team had never raced in College Cup, and some had never even participated in a dragon boat race before. After a day full of cold and foggy racing, our women's boat (UCSD Eidolon Hydros) placed 3rd in the Women's Championship. This was the first time our Women’s boat had placed in many years, so we are proud to have such a strong group of females. Our Mixed A Boat (UCSD Riptide) made it to A Division Championship, Mixed B Boat (UCSD Wave break) made it to B Division Championship, and Mixed C Boat (UCSD Sea swell) made it to C Division Championship.
Our team of 60+ people had a fun time racing in the cold, hanging out under the tent trying to stay warm, and enjoying each other's company. We have had a lot of tough competition this year, and this race definitely showed us how hard other teams have been working. We look forward to training harder and even race some of the same teams again this March!
