Eventful Regional Tournament for Men's Soccer
After good league form in the latter half of the season, UCSD booked a spot to the Regional tournament in San Luis Obispo. Playing against tougher opponents, the Tritons understood the difficulties coming ahead.
UCSD's first game was against SJSU, a rival they were familiar with from past tournaments. The match started off neutral, both teams evenly going at the game. UCSD struck first in the first half as Senior Captain Kody Harris won a penalty kick, letting Grad Forward Rohan Oprisko to easily put the ball in the net. The first half ended 1-0 to the Tritons, who were well in command of the game. The 2nd half told a similar story, with the Tritons digging an even deeper hole for SJSU. Senior Captain Luca Scotzniovsky scored the next goal, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner, assisted by Grad Forward Voja Maric. Less than 10 minutes later, Sophomore Forward Zach Boender placed the ball into the net from inside the six-yard box from a lovely assist from Senior Midfielder Daniel Sanchez-Cruz. The game finishes 3-0 in favor of UCSD.
The next game was played against USC, who is also another familiar opponent of UCSD. A much tougher match for the Tritons, they start the match off strong, pressing high and giving USC as little breathing room as possible. UCSD got on the scoreboard first after a strong shot from outside the box by Senior Captain Luca Scotzniovsky, assisted by Grad Forward Voja Maric. The game was in the Triton's favor until right before the end of the first half, when USC scored a sublime curled free-kick from outside of the box. The half ended 1-1, still in either team's hands. The second half began with lots of energy from both teams. UCSD had multiple chances to score, but unfortunately, USC got onto the scoreboard next, scoring a half volley from outside the box from a free-kick. The Tritons played hard to pull a goal back, but could not do so, as the match finishes 2-1 in USC's favor.
The Triton's next match was against CSU Chico, a team they have never played. Both teams were looking to secure a win to hopefully push them to the knock out round. CSU Chico got onto the scoreboard first, but UCSD quickly pulled a goal back after a cool combination between Grad Forwards Kyle Vigil and Voja Maric, with Kyle putting it into the back of the net. However, Chico scored another goal before the end of the first half, putting the Tritons behind by one goal at the break. The second half started intensely, as both teams wanted to score more to edge their way into the knockout stage. UCSD fought hard to put another goal into the net, but sadly, it was Chico that scored the next goal, bringing the game to 3-1. The match finished 3-1, with the Tritons getting another loss playing their final game of the tournament. The Tritons leave Regionals with a record of 1W 2L, hopefully coming back next year to get better results. The Tritons season has come to an end, and matches will resume in the 2020 winter quarter. Thanks for keeping up with our season!
