2/17-2/18/24 - President’s day
President’s Day marks the middle of our regular season and the squids came out fired-up for our home tournament. We started off pool play playing against Colorado mamabird, Utah, and Stanford. Our first game against Colorado did not go as planned, as while we started off ok, the game quickly got away from us resulting in a 15-5 loss. Our second game was against Stanford and the squids were able to bounce back against our in-region opponents getting a 10-7 win. Our final game of the day was against Utah, and unfortunately the squids came out slow and fell behind by 5 breaks. In the dying minutes of the game, the squids were able to get 3 successive breaks and had the opportunity to break again to force universe, but Utah held and the squids lost 12-10.
On day 2 the squids began power pools, but due to our day 1 performance we were unable to make the bracket regardless of how we performed. The squids were in a power pool with UBC, UCSB and UCI. We beat UCSB in our first game 12-8, but then lost to UBC on uni 10-9 in a hard fought game. The squids were able to finish the day strong though with a 14-7 win over UCI.
On Monday, the squids began their games in the 9th place bracket. Our first game was against UCLA, but the squids came out slow and the game quickly got out of control with us losing 15-4. In our final game of the tournament the tired squids played UBC going down 7-1 right off the bat. However, we were able to fight back bringing the score to 8-8 but unfortunately lost again on uni finishing the tournament in 12th. The squids had some good performances this tourney and look to build on this going into the Stanford invite in early march.
