2/10/24 - Late Game Drama as Tritons Drop Points for Second Week in a Row in Tie vs USD
After a draw in the last moments vs. UCI last week, the Tritons went into this weeks match against USD hungry for a win. For the first 30 minutes, the Tritons controlled the game, dominating territory on the field and possession of the ball. The team was rewarded for their dominance with a goal after sophomore Jake Honma and senior Vismay Manoj would pressure USD into giving the ball away in their own half. Midfielder William Ross picked up the ball and cooly passed in to wide open Kalani Takamura for an open goal, 1 - 0 Tritons. Thereafter, the game became more even, with both teams struggling to establish themselves as dominant.
The back and forth continued into the second half, but a change of tactics from USD seemed to make the difference. The Tritons could not play the ball out of their own half, struggling to keep it for more than a couple passes. Despite this, center back Bardia Lajevardi scored a scrappy goal on a corner kick to put the UCSD up 2 - 0. However, USD wouldn't back down, scoring a goal of their own via a penalty kick and then a late equalizer with five minutes to go. At 2 - 2, the team could see last weeks tie happening again, but Jake Honma was determined not to let it happen as he found the back of the net in extra time to put the Tritons ahead once more. Their lead wouldn't last, however, as USD would strike again to level the game at 3 - 3, where the game would end.
