Tennis on Campus - Southern California Sectionals
This tournament is the annual tournament for Southern California club tennis. Schools from all over Southern California come to compete for three nationals spots: the top three schools from the SoCal section have the opportunity to compete at Nationals in April! Our club decided to bring three teams to Sectionals this year, and we were lucky to be able to bring 30 people to the tournament. We were most likely the biggest group at the tournament and proud to be representing UCSD! We are glad all of our players got to experience the competitive, yet fun environment this tournament has to offer every year.
The first day of the tournament typically consists of pools as shown in the above results. The second day of the tournament is a double elimination bracket stage, which hosted four different brackets. The bracket a team was in depended on the ranking in each of their pools. Our A team was in the gold bracket, our B team in the silver, and our C team in the bronze (the last bracket was copper). Our A team played UCSB A first in the quarterfinals of the gold draw and won 27-13. Unfortunately, our A team lost in the semifinals against USC 27-30 in a very close last match, but we seized the win when playing Cal Poly SLO for 3rd place 27-18. Our B and C teams also got to play other schools' A and B teams, which was a good experience for everyone. Our B team played SDSU A and lost 16-28, but won against UCSB B 27-16. Our C team played SLO B and lost 17-27, but won against SDSU C 30-9.
Overall, this tournament was a huge success on all fronts, including gaining entry to nationals, bringing the biggest group of Southern California to sectionals, and having a fantastic time with the team.
