11/09/24 - UCSD Triton Invitational
The Tritons hosted their annual Triton Invite this past holiday weekend at Canyonview Aquatic Center!
The A-Team started Saturday with a hard-fought loss against Michigan, the back-to-back national champions. They fell to Michigan 13-7, but there were some great offensive efforts, including the 3 goals put on the board by Tania Frank. They also faced off against longtime rival Arizona State, and defeated them 18-4, leading with 4 goals from Tania and 3 goals from Elizabeth Hernandez. Goalies Story Waxman and Brynna Moore each had a successful 5-meter block in this game as well.
On Sunday, the A-Team faced two tough opponents, starting with the always-competitive UC Santa Barbara A-Team. There were 13 ejections drawn, leading to many successful power plays, but unfortunately, it was a loss, with a final score of 11-9. Tania Frank was once against the offensive dominance of the game with 3 goals. The last game of the weekend for A Team was against Cal State Long Beach, with a competitive victory of 9-7. Elizabeth Hernandez led the team with 4 goals. With 36 defensive steals on the weekend, the win capped off a successful home tournament weekend for the UCSD A team.
The B Team kicked off the weekend against San Diego State’s B Team. Although it was a tough loss of 11-3, it was a good game, with Isabella Worley, Kira Sellers, and Monica Rabin each putting up a point on the board for B Team. The second game on Saturday was against Cal State Long Beach, with another loss of 11-3. Isabella Worley won all the sprints for this game, and Taylor Humphreys had a total of 2 goals.
On Sunday, the B Team started early in the morning with a great performance against Chico State, with a final loss score of 13-4. The first quarter was 5-3, with the B team showing some great defensive skills throughout the weekend. Taylor Humphreys once again led the scoring with 2 goals. The weekend ended with a loss against UC Santa Barbara B, 11-4. On the offensive side, Kira Sellers led with 2 goals this game. Goalies Beth Flynn and Sabine Diehl had a combined total of 33 blocks, which was incredible work by the pair throughout the weekend.
Triton Invite was such a great weekend of competitive water polo action. Jolyn SoCal also came out on both days of the tournament, which was enjoyable for all attendees, and there was also a collaboration canned food drive with UC San Diego Houselessness Service Club, which proved to be a great success.
This tournament marks the last of 2024 and the Tritons are so eager to take on 2025 water polo!
