10/26/24 - Huckfest: The Return of Squid LITE in 2024
At this year's Halloween spooktacular tournament, Huckfest, Air Squids LITE traveled to UC Irvine for one last hooray with last year’s team. Unfortunately, due to fake field issues, Saturday’s games started at 3pm and went rather late into the night. Fortunately, this added the spooky vibes on top of players dressed in their Halloween costumes. Notable costumes included Spade as a Starbucks barista and DiGiorno as Zelda.
The first game, against SDSU, started off with good energy and was close going into the half, but fatigue began to catch up with the Squids and it was the first tournament of the year, so the team chemistry wasn’t fully developed. This led to a disappointing 7-11 loss. In the next game against the Cal Poly Slo B team, the Mustangs started off strong with two back to back breaks and while the chemistry between players became more noticeable, the Mustangs were able to hold out for a win 11-7 over the Tritons. The player of the game went to Saw-See for making multiple layout bids to catch errant deep hucks for multiple scores, keeping the game as close as it could be. The final game on Saturday was under the lights against USD and this was when the team started to click together. The Squids rekindled their energy for a late night win over USD, dominating them 12-5.
Unfortunately, Sunday started bright early with the first game at 9:00am, so the team did not get to rest as much as they wanted. The first game against UCI ended in spectacular fashion on a universe point (sudden death) score from DN after running a flawless endzone set, really highlighting the chemistry that the Squids built on Saturday, taking down UCI 9-8. This success did not continue into the next game where LITE lost to the other Cal Poly SLO team 6-10, resulting in a departure from the championship bracket, and leading them to fight for 5th place. This did not slow the Squids down because they rebounded to defeat one of the UCLA teams 9-5. Finally, in the 5th place game against the other SDSU team, the Squid’s won a nail biter with a universe point win at 7-6. This win was a culmination of the energy and chemistry that had progressively increased over the tournament, with one notable play being DiGiorno and Baby Maz going back and forth over half the length of the field for a score. The universe point ended with a score from Wigglytuff after the offense panicked SDSU’s defense on the endzone line. This capped off the Huckfest with a shining light despite Halloween being right around the corner.
