UCSD Women’s Club soccer had their first home game this past Saturday, October 21st. The Tritons were set to face their rival school, San Diego State University. Seniors Madeline Woo and Kinsey Brillheart were honored before the game, and the team wore matching pink wrist bands to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The game started off intense, with the Tritons dominating possession and moving the ball well. There were a few scoring opportunities, however the score remained 0-0 for the first 20 minutes of play. It wasn’t until senior Mia Fava headed the ball to sophomore Suhana Singh, who flicked the ball back to Mia in the 18 yard box. Mia took a touch with her right foot and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
The Tritons held SDSU for the rest of the half, going into halftime ahead by one goal. With the start of the second half, the Tritons looked energized. Eventually, graduate student Hannah Waki made a run down the left wing and the ball was slipped through to her. She perfectly placed a cross across the face of the goal, which senior Madeline Woo finished in the top right corner. SDSU found a goal late in the second half, however the Tritons were able to keep their lead and ended the game with a 2-1 win! The Tritons look ahead to Regionals in Cal Poly SLO this upcoming weekend.
