10/16/22 - Nom Nom Nom at Sandwich Day in LA

The Sandwich day tournament this past Sunday (10/16) was a huge success for our resident Squids as they ended up taking the competition by storm and winning first place! After a two hour commute up north to our friendly rivals UCLA, the Air Squids were ready to throw some plastic and score some goals. Turns out, that’s exactly what they did.

The anticipation and excitement of our first games of the season was palpable, as UCSD took a decisive first game against Long Beach. Being the first tournament together, there were some kinks to iron out on offense, but with some defensive grit, the Squids were able to pull out a decisive win 11-3.

Next up was Occidental. Squids did a great job of contesting unders and making Detox work it most of the way up the field, but ultimately lost to some well placed hucks. Final score was 8-9. Even with the close, disappointing loss, the Squids were able to quickly brush it off and pulled out a strong victory against one of three UCLA teams. Squids had figured out the formula: uncontested under to Doof, one continue, deep shot to the endzone (to Gummo more often than not). That’s not all though. A new star recruit tracked down some deep shots of his own. Freshman Spencer Rebman provided invaluable options under and deep all game long meshing perfectly with an otherwise veteran O line. This new squidling is not afraid to get down and dirty, showcasing a casual full extension layout. Final score: 11-7.

Now onto the winners’ bracket. UCSD took down a second UCLA team with a windy game to spice things up. With some resilient defense, Squids were able to cause turns left and right, eventually marching their way patiently up the field to score. Now for finals. Loyola Marymount University threw a cheesy zone in hope of confusing the squids. Too bad it was Swiss cheese because UCSD easily sliced through the plentiful holes it had early, ruining their confidence to use it again the whole game. Swiftly it was 6-0, a bagel more appetizing than any that the tournament provided but sadly was snuffed out. Still, the unstoppable cephalopods went on to claim a clean 12-5 victory and celebrated appropriately with sandwiches (obviously). Shout out to Gummo’s totally adequate-sized pickles for saving the team. Deefo sadly was taken down in the frey by a calf cramp, but who knows how many more would’ve fallen if not for that sweet sweet brine.
