    1/25/25 - Santa Barbara Invitational

    Game 1 vs. Utah Valley

In the first game of our tournament, we faced Utah Valley University, who loved throwing the disc deep. The Squids were able to force consistent turnovers, led by Aiden "Hooch" Reedy-Schneider and Jonathan "PSI" McGurrin, but Valley’s defense proved too stout for us to convert in the first half. A few timely mistakes had us down 7-5 at the half, but the Squids slowly found their groove and began to convert breaks in the second half. However, it was too little too late, and even despite excellent effort grabs from Ethan "Tendy" Wang, the Squids lost 11-13.

    Game 2, Santa Barbara:

Coming off a tough loss, the energy was low for the Squids to start the game against their long-time rival, Santa Barbara Black Tide. They were able to rattle off many points in a row, before the Squids woke up and punched back with a run of our own, led by third year player Ghislain "Goomba" Demeester. With a comfortable lead and the energy picking up from both teams, the Squids slowly let the lead slip away, and Black Tide found themselves on the cusp of winning with the score at 11-11. However, the stalwart O-Line found Nate "Wallaby" Becker for an easy upline goal to seal the deal and give the Squids their first win of the season.

    Game 3, Santa Cruz:

As the day progressed, the environmental conditions began to intensify, with strong winds and colder temperatures being a major factor in our next game against the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. They were certainly the strongest team we had faced yet, and it showed when they were able to consistently score against our defense, even despite the best efforts of Eli "Dewey" D’Amico and Daniel "Forty" Bonkowsky. However, the Squids were able to match the powerful Slug offense until the second half, when the windy conditions and the stout Santa Cruz defense proved too much for our Squids, resulting in an 11-13 loss. Big shout out to Charlie "Oobi" Wilson-Jackson, however, for making an incredible grab and bringing great energy.

    Game 4, UCLA:

On day two, the conditions were even worse, with rain and even hail striking the fields as our Squids warmed up. Despite the weather, we suited up to play our first game of consolation against UCLA. Due to the strong winds and rain, both teams consistently ran zone defenses to try to shake the opposing offenses. Nico "CBH" Nonemaker and Andy "Nefty" Huang played a great part in making UCLA turn the disc over many times. However, like in game one, too many chances were squandered, and after a few errant throws from the Squid's offense, the shortened game ended 5-8 in favor of LA.

With Stanford forfeiting the last consolation game to the Squids, we ended 2-3 on the weekend, with solid results against high-level teams and a large amount of growth from top to bottom on our roster. The Squids look forward to the President’s Day Invite for their next tournament and hope to win more games.
