1/21/24 - Triton Invite
The UCSD Tritons, along with 8 other teams, powered through a total of 26 games this weekend – rain or shine - at the Triton Invite.
The UC San Diego B team started off the weekend strong with a 10-4 victory against the University of Washington B team. Taylor Humphreys scored 3 of these 10 goals. Isabella Lardieri scored her first collegiate goal during this game! Then her second collegiate goal! The remaining 5 goals were scored by 5 other players, demonstrating the depth of shooters on this team. That same night, the B team played a nail biter against UCLA’s B team, going back and forth until it was 5-5. Then they went into overtime: 3 minutes of playing time to score the “golden goal”. After multiple changes in possession, Jade Chismar drew an ejection. Then Abby Gabel shot from outside during the 6-on-5, winning the game 6-5!
The next day, UCSD’s B team put up a good fight against University of Oregon’s B team, ultimately scoring 4-8. Highlights from this game include Jade Chismar scoring her first goal as a Triton, Natalie Champagne drawing 2 of the team’s 6 ejections, and 5 blocks from goalie Beth Flynn. They ended the weekend with an exciting game versus UCI. While they made up a lot of goals in the second half of the game, the end score was 9-11. Shoutout to Ivy Goodwin for scoring a third of the goals and drawing 2 ejections this game. And shoutout to Kira Sellers, Abby Gabel, Jade Chismar, and Aleesa Ebert for each making a steal.
The UC San Diego A team went undefeated this weekend against: University of Washington A (score: 6-4), University of Utah (score: 14-4), University of Oregon A (score: 13-9), and CSULB (score: 12-5). The leading goal scorer for the weekend was Elizabeth Hernandez, who was getting it done in set. She scored 7 of the team’s 45 goals. Another standout stat was Natalie Kaplanyan making 13 steals!
During the game against UW, the A team had a strong defensive presence. Goalie Brynna Moore shut down a penalty shot, Amanda Martilla made 2 field blocks, and Natalie Kaplanyan had 4 steals. Against Utah, we saw 8 different scorers contribute to the team’s 14 goals. Leading the pack was Tania Frank, with 4 goals. Additionally, the Tritons won all 4 sprints thanks to Kayleigh Dennen, Daphne Neilan, and Julia Derunes. When they faced UO, the A team converted on 3 of the 5 ejections that they drew and were able to shut down multiple attempts made by the other team to run 7-on-6 plays. Sonja Ukropina and Amanda Martilla stepped up with 2 assists each, and goalie Story Waxman blocked her second penalty shot of the weekend. Finally, when the Tritons played CSULB, the field players made a whopping 14 steals and the goalies blocked 5 shots each. Shoutout Sunny Perkins for making her first goal of the weekend after countering all the way to the 2m from the set guard position.
Overall, the Tritons had a very successful weekend! They would like to thank the other teams for traveling out to play, and are ready for the next tournament: Davis Invite, February 3rd and 4th.
