01/20/24 UCSD against UCR and UCLA
Over the weekend, the UCSD badminton team participated in the second league match in the Southern California Collegiate Badminton League (SCCBL). UCSD played against fierce opponents from UCLA and UCR. UCSD defeated UCR with a commanding score of 14-1 and narrowly lost to UCLA 6-9.
In men's doubles, senior Benji Ryujin and freshman Matthew Chan engaged in a challenging three-set match against UCR's top pair, Richard Ye and Dillon Hoang, narrowly losing with scores of 19-21, 22-20, 14-21. Senior Eric Mei and sophomore Shanil Patel faced tough competition, securing a victory of 21-17, 21-23, 21-14 against UCR opponents Gustavos Fuentos and Aaron Chen, but suffering a defeat of 14-21, 21-16, 21-13 against UCLA pair Ethan Lin and Shun Hung.
In women's doubles, the senior pair of Megha Pothamsetty and Kaia To triumphed in a closely contested match with scores of 22-20 and 21-19 against UCR pair Kessie Ng and Vy Le. They continued their success by defeating the UCLA pair in another tight match with scores of 13-21, 21-17, 15-21. Sophomore pair Ragalina Palaka and Allison Huang secured a victory against UCLA pair Shutong Hou and Rena Chen with scores of 12-21, 22-20, 21-16. Additionally, fellow sophomore pair Jessica Qu and Faline Le emerged victorious in a close match against UCLA opponents with scores of 21-18, 17-21, 21-18.
In women's singles, freshman Zihan Xu demonstrated dominance against UCR and UCLA, achieving scores of 21-8, 21-7 against Vy Le and 21-16, 21-11 against Angela Song. In men's singles, Junior Yuanyang Lu played a tight game against UCLA's Ethan Lin but unfortunately fell short with scores of 15-21, 21-18, 20-22.
In mixed doubles, senior Henry Kang and sophomore Ragalina Palaka secured victories against UCR pair Kessie Ng and Xavier Maria and UCLA pair Tam Vo and Andrew Ly with scores of 21-15, 21-15 and 21-16, 21-15, respectively.
Throughout this league match, UCSD badminton faced numerous closely contested games, providing many players with an enjoyable experience in these intense matches. The team looks forward to returning even stronger in the next league match.
