2024-2025 Sports Clubs and Esports Award Winners

Hearty Commendations and Heartfelt Goodbyes Aplenty at Year-End Banquet

By Shawn Cyr
Assistant Marketing Director

As participants entered the banquet hall, they passed through a realistic (yet cardboard) faux wood archway adorned with "UC San Diego Recreation" in bright, white letters. When they exited a few hours later through that same archway to gather for group photos and fond farewells, many were toting award certificates, raffle prizes, and lasting memories.

Such was the scene at the 2024-2025 UC San Diego Sports Clubs and Esports banquet, a Western-themed extravaganza that saw year-end recognition handed out to top student-athletes and coaches on June 6 in the Bayview Room at Marina Village.

But the night was so much more than simply distributing certificates. Accompanied by mouth-watering BBQ food and the subtle smell of hay from the nearby photo booth, participants were treated to an electric Sports Clubs and Esports wrap-up video created by Marketing student assistant Kevin Lau, a tear-inducing Hall of Fame induction of sorts for retiring Men's Club Water Polo Coach Hector Sanchez, and a heartfelt goodbye to longtime Recreation staffer and friend Jacob Woodhead. A UC San Diego graduate and current Competitive Sports Assistant Director, Jacob is leaving Recreation after 10 years to join the San Diego Police Department.

The music was ostensibly country and shifted — occasionally, somewhat abruptly — in tone, which fit the mood. The highs were high and the goodbyes were bittersweet, but in the end, it was a night everyone donning oversized belt buckles and cowboy boots will remember for years to come.
