Recreation employs hundreds of amazing student staff that range from Weight Room Attendants and Sales Desk Staff to Referees and Graphic Designers! We recently started a recognition program where a monthly student employee will be recognized by their peers and Recreation Pro Staff. Our January student of the month is, Fernando Tello, Fernando is a 1st Year Electrical Computer Engineering student from 6th college who works with Rec as an aquatics maintenance worker.
Here was why he was nominated:
Fernando is at the pool four days a week and five nights a week. Working hard as he helps put covers on our two Olympic pools every weeknight which saves our department tens of thousands of dollars in heating costs. You can usually find him working until 11pm nightly. That’s AFTER having done a maintenance shift during the day making sure students and UCSD community members enjoy a clean and safe facility. His work ethic and dedication to our department are both phenomenal and his efforts in making sure our trash cans are emptied nightly have greatly helped curb those UCSD trash pandas (raccoons) from continuing to add the Canyonview Aquatic Center to their nightly hot spots around campus.
