With a new quarter comes new things to do with UCSD Recreation! We’ve come up with a list of things for everyone to enjoy this winter quarter whether it be wanting to get in shape, go on a trip, or learn a new skill. After eating all that holiday food over break, the perfect way to get back in shape is through one of hundreds of our Recreation activities, but here is a list of 10 things to get you thinking:
This is a NEW affordable, flexible, and fun pass to get you active and try practicing different kinds of fitness and yoga! Instead of signing up for a certain type of fitness or yoga class like how it was in the past, you can buy the new Fit Yoga Pass for $65 if you are a student ($105 for members/$150 for non-members) which will give you access to ALL the fitness/yoga classes offered! That means you could try a new class everyday of the week! There are over 70 classes offered per week and this pass allows you to attend all of them, so go to as many or as few as you like! The schedule of classes can be found here.
We offer Student and Graduate Student Personal Wellness programs and that consist of an initial physical fitness assessment, entrance interviews, six weeks of small group fitness training and a follow-up fitness personalized program design. These Wellness Programs will give you the opportunity to create a lifestyle of well-being and helping you achieve your fitness goals. Did I mention it is FREE too?
3. Intramurals
Another way to stay in shape but while also spending time with friends is playing intramurals! For Winter quarter there’s basketball, team bowling, passing league football (men’s), soccer, 4-on-4 volleyball, and team rock climbing. And the best part is that is it’s only $7 to play unlimited intramurals for the quarter! So gather a group of friends and make a team for one or more of these awesome intramural sports.
Here in sunny San Diego you don’t often get to see snow, so why not go on an Outback Adventures trip to go snowboarding or skiing! On this day trip you will get to take a break and carve it up at the best nearby snow to campus; Bear Mountain (Feb. 20th) or Mountain High (Jan. 21st or Jan. 29th). Outback will take care of getting you there, all you have to worry about is how much fun you’ll have on this snowy trip. Lift ticket is included in the price and all participants will receive 20% off a ski or snowboard rental packages through Outback
Another cool trip that Outback offers is their Sunset Kayak Mission Bay trip. Imagine the beauty of Mission Bay, the sunset and city lights reflecting off of the calm water as you peacefully kayak throughout the bay. I wouldn’t want to miss this! And even better, no experience is required, so feel free to come enjoy this calming scene while practicing your kayaking skills no matter your level.
6. Argentine Tango-Fundamentals & Beyond
If you’d prefer to stay inside this “chilly” winter, maybe a dance class is the perfect option for you! Our Argentine Tango is a basic technique class where you can practice your social dancing including posture and balance, dance frame, leading and following, and more. And you’ll be able to dance the Argentine Tango by the end of the class! There is a mix and mingling of partners, so you’ll be able to meet new people while learning new dance skills.
7. Wrestling Takedowns Workout
Another great indoor class is our Wrestling Takedowns Workout rec class, which will cover a basic introduction to wrestling throws, sweeps, and shots, all of which are commonly used in martial arts. This is a class for all levels of wrestling and a great place for you to hone your wrestling skills this winter!
