RECognition: Nathaniel Grant, Recreation Experience

Recreation's monthly series to highlight our fabulous staff

By Shawn Cyr
Assistant Marketing Director

Nathaniel Grant is well known for being fast.

As a sprinter on the UCSD Track & Field team, he holds personal records of 10.89 seconds in the 100 meters and 22.33 seconds in the 200 meters. Speed is the name of his game.

Except for when, well, it isn’t. That’s when Nathaniel slows it all the way down — out on the golf course. Nathaniel likes to tee it up at courses such as Oaks North Golf Course in San Diego and his home track of Sierra Lakes Golf Club in Fontana.

“Golf is a fun new hobby for me that I really enjoy trying to learn, even if it can be frustrating,” says Nathaniel, a cognitive science major (2026) in Earl Warren College.

As part of his Facility Supervisor role with REC, Nathaniel helps out at the front desk of Recreation spaces — including RIMAC, Main Gym, and Canyonview — and helps oversee the setup of facilities. He said he was interested in working for REC because the job provided flexibility to mesh with his academic and athletic responsibilities.

"My favorite part about working for REC would be the community I am a part of here," says Nathaniel, who joined REC in 2023, "As well as the relationships I have built while working for REC."

“Nathaniel is someone we have seen grow into a leader over the past few months,” said Bobby Jaffe, Recreation Experience Coordinator for Main Gym. “His positive energy and personality bring out the best in his coworkers, peers, and patrons alike. He is someone we see continually acting on the six departmental values of Inclusion, Fun, Service, Integrity, Leadership, and Community in his everyday interactions.”

When he’s not on the golf course or at Triton Track, you can usually find Nathaniel in the kitchen, scarfing down a burrito or something from The Taco Stand, his favorite local eatery.

That is if you can catch him, of course.
