This past weekend, teams from up and down the coast, along with friends and family alike, all gathered in Mission Bay with their binoculars to watch and compete in the most anticipated event of the season. For many sailors, this would be their first regatta on the sailing team.
Saturday was a nice calm day. The first race was postponed a couple of hours until midafternoon to allow time for the wind to pick up. It was calm for most of the day with the UCSD B team picking up event deciding wins for the team. With a late start to the day everyone was anxiously awaiting for day two of the event.
Sunday was a sprint from start to finish. To make up for lost time the team started early and rotated efficiently. The day started out smooth and casual; but as afternoon rolled around the wind picked up to 10+ knots with white caps galore across the water.
With swim trunks wet from the wake, and previously pristine sails covered with sea foam we ended the day with the windiest race Mission Bay had ever seen.
The top boat was skippered by Nick Dorn with crew Drake Coy, and Nigel Lipps with Jessica Dally. Freshman/Sophomore picked up the hard fought win with a heavy lead of 21 points. The regatta came to a victorious conclusion with UCSD boats placing first, third, and eighth in the Freshman/Sophomore division.
