To start off the New Year, UCI hosted their annual Anteater Collegiate Championships on January 18th and 19th. Every year, various California colleges vie for recognition amongst singles and doubles events within four separate skill levels. UCSD Badminton was represented by 23 players in all five event categories at all skill levels. Joseph Zhang (freshman) and Mitsuyo Machida (freshman) made it to semifinals in A flight Men’s Singles and D flight Women’s Singles respectively. Notably, Lawrence Leung (senior) and partner Eu Jynn Tang (junior) played rigorously and exceptionally to win 1st place in C flight Men’s Doubles in a close finals match going 21-16, 18-21, 21-16. Looking towards achievements in Women’s Doubles, Vanessa Do (sophomore) earned 2nd place in C flight Women’s Doubles alongside close partner Jasmine Huang (sophomore). Additionally, Do also placed 1st in D flight Women’s Doubles with Lucy Zhang, a student from UCR’s badminton team in an easy victory of 21-11 and 21-19. Many UCSD team members also participated in C flight mixed doubles where Tiffany Truong (junior) and partner Jenson Lee from UCI achieved in 2nd place, only narrowly losing to their opponents in a close 21-19, 19-21, 21-11 match. Leilani Lu (junior) and partner Martin Nguyen from SJSU also fought to semifinals where they met Truong and Lee. With the great engagement and victories from players of all grade levels, UCSD Badminton is excited to see what else 2020 has in store for them as they plan for travel in February to similarly outperform others at the University of Washington’s Husky Open.
