On Saturday 02/02/2020, UCSD men’s ultimate (B) – ‘Squid Lite’ – played pool play at the Presidents Day qualifier at Cal Poly SLO. We came into the tournament as the 15th seed out of 25 teams, and finished our pool on Saturday 2 and 2. Squid Lite beat the 16th seed San Jose State, and 25th seed UC Irvine (B), but lost to the 5th seed Occidental and 6th seed Grand Canyon University. On Sunday in bracket play, Squid Lite lost our first game vs the 2nd seed UC Santa Cruz, as well as the following game vs the 4th seed Chico State. Ultimately, the team has much to be proud of. Despite our losses, we only lost to teams seeded higher than us, and no team was seeded lower than 6th – every team Squid Lite lost to was a competitor to win the tournament. Furthermore, the losses to Chico State and UC Santa Cruz were relatively competitive – Chico state won by only 3 points, and UC Santa Cruz was held to the fewest points they scored all tournament (except for the grand finals, which they won 9-7 over Santa Clara University). Squid Lite is definitely looking stronger than past years, and is one of the top developmental teams in the entire region.

UCSD men’s developmental team played against three incredibly good teams on the first day. Each point played was competitive, and hard fought. The Squids fought for every inch of field. The team enjoyed the tournament, and played their best during each of the games that were played and even collected some highlight reel footage: many of the points showed players diving to catch discs, and prevent opponents from catching them. Throughout the tournament, the developmental team built a strong chemistry, which they used to have a great second day of the tournament, putting up competitive scores against San Luis Obispo’s developmental team and UC Irvine. Overall, the developmental team used this tournament to get better together as a team. The Squids are excited for the next tournament, and will be even better than this tournament in San Luis Obispo.
