On Saturday January 25, 2020, UCSD Women’s Lacrosse hosted their annual Alumni Game. This was the team’s first game back from Winter Break and it was the perfect opportunity to prepare for the upcoming league games. Freshmen Gillian Husovsky and Kika Funk dominated the draw against our draw specialist and recent graduate Michaela Jules. Senior Kellen Peddicord returned to her roots on defense and led the time in caused turnovers, forcing the alumna to rethink their attacking strategies. UCSD boasted goals from Senior Captain Nicole Goodwin, Senior Jiyoung Yun, Freshman Ellen Jurgens, and Freshman Melina Tsotras.

The team named, freshman, Ellen Jurgens as the game MVP. Jurgens took a leading role in the midfield, directing her team through offensive plays and scoring 2 goals. Her performance on the field led to smooth, quick transitions that were essential to the team’s offensive strategies. Coach Gabby had an honorary mention to freshman Sadie King who only joined the team two weeks prior. Gabby commented, “Though she is a new player, Sadie has really found her place on the team. She’s not afraid to lead the offense and be vocal with her instructions but she is also a great listener and knows how to work best with her offensive team.” The final score was 5-6 in favor of the alumni team, and though the team had hoped for a win, their experience on the field with new and old friends was worth the battle.

After the game, UCSD hosted an alumni lunch at Regents Pizzeria. Lunch provided the opportunity for the team to get to know the alumni and their different experiences after graduation.
