Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta
This past weekend the UCSD sailing team hosted our annual Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta out of Mission Bay. This regatta honors the memory of a former sailing team captain, Jeff Simon, who tragically passed away from cancer at at 22 years old. Each year, the team holds a raffle at the end of the regatta to raise money for donations to a charity in the name of Jeff Simon.
Saturday saw light and shifty winds, causing a few delays in racing and ending with only 6 races for the day. Sunday was similarly light and shifty but picked up enough to allow for a few more races per rotation. UCSD was thrilled to take second place, with USC coming in first and UCSC coming in third.
The raffle after races finished on Sunday was a resounding success. Each year we choose a charity to donate to, and this year we chose Active Minds, an organization with a chapter at UCSD that is dedicated to raising awareness of mental health among college students. The raffle was made up of items that included specially made Jeff Simon sweatshirts, gift-cards donated by local businesses, and more. By selling raffle tickets, we were able to raise over a thousand dollars to donate. The Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta was a huge success!
