USD Scrimmage
On Thursday, October 17, UCSD Men’s Rugby took on the USD Toreros in a scrimmage match at USD. The game was divided into four 20 minute quarters and both teams were allowed substitutions at any time. Due to the fact that the game took place on a weekday, many players on the UCSD side were unable to make it, forcing UCSD to employ several rookies to take on the Toreros. The game began with an early USD lead as the rookies were getting exposure to a real game of rugby. The veterans playing did their best to hold out against the Toreros, however USD continued to stretch their lead until the first half ended. Despite the large point deficit they had to overcome, UCSD remained focused and determined to continue in the next half. Having now adjusted to the intensity of the sport, the rookies began the second half with an earnest desire to correct the mistakes they made in the first half. UCSD showed their determination early by scoring several points in the third quarter, closing the gap in points. USD, unwilling to lose, retaliated by strengthening their defense and stopping the next few drives by UCSD. By the middle of the fourth, UCSD had closed the gap to only 5 points. However, because USD rugby’s time on the field was strictly enforced, the game came to an early close with UCSD ultimately unable to close the five point gap. UCSD will see USD again in San Diego Rugby Tournament.
