Tritons Show off New Players Double Header Split with USD
In the final phase of tryouts for the 2019-2020 year, UC San Diego played their first competitive games of the fall season against the University of San Diego Toreros this past Saturday. The Tritons’ comeback came up just short in game one, while the bats dominated the second game of the afternoon.
Game 1
The first game started off on a rough note with a four run Torero top of the first on some unlucky hits. The Tritons would claw back a couple runs before chasing USD’s starter and getting to their bullpen. But UC San Diego could never quite level the game, with USD peppering in four more runs in the late innings. A comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth came up one run short, and the Tritons were also unable to push across the tying run in the seventh.

Game 2
The afternoon game of the double header went considerably better for the Tritons. After trailing briefly, the bats erupted in the third inning. UCSD would bat around and then some, taking a commanding 11-2 lead. As the Tritons added a couple runs, USD would maintain a gap within 10 runs to prevent a mercy rule, but never really threatened at coming back in the game.
Game 2: Tritons 14 Toreros 6
These first fall games also wrap up the tryout portion of the year for the Tritons. With sixteen new faces added to a team that has twelve seniors, a playoff berth in 2020 is squarely in their sights. Every position on the field is full of depth, providing the Tritons an opportunity to put a number of quality lineups out to make a strong playoff push. With so many seniors this season, this year’s additions will also carry the club into the next few years of playoff and division contention. It looks to be a very exciting season for the UCSD Tritons.
The fall schedule continues with another double header on Saturday October 26th, at home against the Long Beach State Dirtbags.
