UCSD Punches Ticket to the Conference Playoffs
Your Tritons brought the juice on Saturday and sent Long Beach State back to LA with a decisive 14-4 loss. This win ended a four year long losing streak against The Beach, and secured the Tritons a spot in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) playoffs.
The Tritons were not favored in this match-up, but prevailed through grit and focus on the field. UCSD dropped a 10 spot on Beach by the end of the first half due to its potent offense lead by senior attackman Andy "Slippery" Moudakis (International Business UCSD '19). Andy recorded his second 6 goal game of the season, and helped to fuel the offensive engine that saw five different goal scorers.
Defensively this game could not have been won without the efforts of our starting close defensemen; junior Matteo Liebman (Bio-Premed UCSD '20), sophomore Cole Barden (Psychology-Sociology UCSD '21), and freshman Daniel Kubek (Engineering UCSD '22) and Liam Mathers (Engineering UCSD '22). These four shut down both of Beach's top scorers, who accounted for more than 80% of their team's scoring. This two headed dragon on attack put up 20 on CSU San Marcos and 10 on USD. They did not score in this game and we call that defensive domination.
The team is excited about this win but cannot become complacent. UCSD looks forward to securing a #1 seed going into playoffs for the second year in a row. To do this the Tritons must beat top seeded USD on Wednesday (04/10/2019) and conference rival CSUSM next Saturday (04/13/2019).
