UC San Diego Badminton Closes Out the Year with Annual Sun God Tournament
Over the Memorial Day weekend, UC San Diego Badminton hosted the 2019 Yonex Sun God Tournament, an annual tradition that welcomes over 250 participants from all skill levels to compete. This year featured Kyle Jordan Emerick and Sattawat Pongnairat, both of whom are internationally ranked players in the world of badminton. Yonex again was the tournament sponsor this year, donating numerous prizes for both competitors and raffles. Professional photographer Chris C. Do was also flown down from Northern California to capture some amazing shots of the matches. UC San Diego had a number of podium finishes this year, a significant rise from previous years. Senior Cindy Chan finished in third place for A/B Women’s Singles and C Women’s Singles, as well as second place with UCLA alumna Stephania Lam in C Women’s Doubles. Jasmine Huang, a new freshman to the UC San Diego lineup, secured first place in A/B Women’s Doubles with her sister Mirabelle Huang. In D Mixed Doubles, former captain Albert Nguyen and former team member Evelyn Tan won first place in a two-set victory. And making it to the finals for the second year in a row together, President of the club Kyle Ng and vice-president Chris Do Pham finally placed first in a long finals match scoring 16-21, 21-19, 21-16. Overall, the 2019 Yonex Sun God Tournament was a huge success for the badminton team this year. They look forward to hosting this wonderful event in the future.
