Game Against GCU

This weekend UCSD Women’s Rugby team closed out their 15s season at home with a game against Grand Canyon University Women’s Rugby team, whom are currently ranked second in the league. While this game was no doubt going to be a challenge for UCSD, their spirits seemed high and confident. The first half started with UCSD having possession and they began to work the ball up the field quite tenaciously. Due to a turnover GCU was able to gain possession of the ball and score the first try of the match. UCSD answered back with a penalty try, which occurred after many attempts of trying to get it over the game line and GCU high tackling one of UCSD’s players. As the game continued GCU was able to score a few more trys in the first half. UCSD put up a good fight with trying to steal possession in the rucks, lineouts, and scrums. Also with many game changing tackles made by the UCSD back line, one causing a try to be held up. Going into the second half GCU was in the lead, making minor adjustments to their starting lineup. UCSD already having suffered one injured player, made no changes at the half. Going into the second half UCSD’s positive energy and intensity remained the same, as they were amped up to begin the second half. GCU quickly answered back with two trys. Soon after UCSD suffered two more injuries, which caused a small change in their lineup. UCSD continued to put up a good defense, making strong tackles and fighting for possession. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get them more trys, and they lost the match. Nevertheless the team clapped each other off and commented on how they each appreciated the good sportsmanship shown by one another. UCSD Women’s Rugby looks forward to starting the new season in the spring with rugby 7s, which brings all new challenges and opportunities.
